Test and Measurement: Knick Solutions Are Ready to Perform

Test and Measurement trials typically suscept devices under test to more extreme requirements and environments than what will typically be encountered in regular application. This means that testing hardware used to acquire the data also needs to be able to perform at levels above what is typically seen. Knick isolated signal conditioners, high-voltage transducers, and sensor transmitters are up for the challenge. Attention to detail is evident by the level and depth of specifications and approvals found within all device datasheets.

Safety, Flexibility, and Quality Critical for Ever-Changing Testing Demands

Across most industries, the importance of thorough testing is paramount to a product’s eventual success. This is especially true within the challenging high-voltage markets in which Knick regularly participates. From e-Mobility to aerospace, and from energy storage to rail, the demands seen with testing in high-voltage environments requires testing hardware with ample electrical isolation, flexibility for use in changing testing conditions, and a combination of speed and accuracy which allows for a high level of confidence in the collected data. Power Hardware in the Loop (P-HIL) testing can often see high-voltage components at either the input or output of the circuit. This introduces a requirement for signal conditioners in the hardware loop to exhibit high-voltage isolation at both input and output channels, so that upstream and downstream components can be protected. Knick signal conditioners are designed to meet these challenges, by employing three-port isolation at input, output and power supply channels. Knick’s isolation brings flexibility, as devices can be used within increasing voltage environments. But this flexibility is further proven with input and output configurability seen in most products, across both standard and exotic ranges.

Why Knick?
Knick’s device specifications meet the challenges seen within Test and Measurement applications. Device error is specified as a function of measured value versus what is often seen in the industry as a percentage of full-scale. For Knick products, this error is regularly less than 0.1%. Speed of response is measured in T90, which is defined as a device’s ability to report a change in 90% of the input range at the output. Knick high-voltage signal conditioners measure this change in microseconds. Arguably the most important consideration, safety is delivered in high-voltage environments, with continuous isolation specifications in excess of 1000 V.

Application Highlight: HV Front-Ending of Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ)

Data acquisition systems (DAQ’s) are often used by companies with critical testing requirements to collect and analyze large amounts of data. Often, this requires data acquisition hardware with an ample number of input channels to correspond with the various process variables and electrical quantities to be analyzed. In high-voltage environments, this is especially challenging, as the isolation seen at the DAQ’s input channels is sometimes not high enough to protect the hardware, and anything connected to it, from the elevated voltage. In these situations, Knick is trusted by the top data acquisition companies in the industry, as a partner for the collection of high-voltage data, essentially acting as a high-voltage isolation front-end to data acquisition systems. By trusting Knick transducers to isolate and convert high-voltage, current, and temperature signatures to lower voltage inputs seen at the DAQ, the data acquisition systems can then safely collect this data and combine it with the remaining process variables to perform whatever actions it was employed to do. Knick transducers contain continuous isolation capability to 4.8 kV, making them ideal complements to data acquisition systems for high-voltage applications where front ending of the DAQ proves to be necessary.
